Am I eligible for Social Security Disability Benefits?

If you recently suffered a serious injury or you were diagnosed with a serious illness and are no longer be able to work you are probably panicking about how you will make ends meet, let alone cover your medical expenses.

The good news is that if you previously worked for a number of years and paid into Social Security, you may qualify for Social Security Disability benefits, a lifeline for people in your situation. However, qualifying for this federal program isn’t easy and there are many requirements that must first be met.

First, you must have worked for long enough and recently enough in a job that is covered by Social Security. Disability coverage is based on the number of work credits you earned. Work credits are earned each year and are based on your total yearly wages or reported self-employment income.

Generally speaking, you need 40 work credits to qualify for disability coverage and half of the credits must have been earned during the past ten years. That typically means you must have been working five out of the past ten years. However, the exact number of credits you need depends on your age.

Additionally, your injury or condition must meet the Social Security Administration's definition of “disability” and have caused you to miss work for at least five months. The injury or condition must also be expected to prevent you from working for at least a year.

If you think that you may qualify for SSDI benefits, the next step is filing an application. Because a majority of the applications filed with the SSA are denied, it’s important to complete the application accurately and effectively.
