193 cars involved in Michigan pileup during blizzard last week

A motor-vehicle pileup of massive proportions occurred on Interstate 94 in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, last week, killing one person and leaving nearly two dozen injured.  The pileup occurred during a blizzard on Friday morning and involved 193 vehicles, USA TODAY reported.

In addition to blowing, blinding snow, the temperatures were far below freezing, which made the salt on the roads ineffective, a later report indicated.

Officials said a pileup first occurred on the eastbound side of I-94 between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. Almost immediately afterward, another pileup occurred in the westbound lanes.

The scene became even more dangerous when a load of fireworks on one of the trucks involved exploded, starting the truck on fire. Two firefighters were injured battling the flames.

Another truck carrying 44,000 pounds of formic acid erupted into flames as well, requiring those in the area to take shelter from the hazardous material in the air.

Officials said a 57-year-old Canadian truck driver was killed in one of the wrecks. At least 23 others were injured, including one person who was listed in serious condition.

Car accidents can turn a person’s life upside-down in a matter of seconds. Even if victims are lucky enough to survive a serious car wreck, they can be left with devastating injuries that can last a lifetime.

Even after receiving medical treatment, care accidents can leave individuals permanently disabled or disfigured. Sometimes, car accident victims can no longer perform their jobs because of their injuries.

Workers who are left disabled from car accidents may worry about how they will provide for themselves or their families./ often they are entitled to Social Security disability benefits to help supplement their income.
