Receiving Social Security after a brain injury

After sustaining a brain injury in a car accident, some Michigan residents may find that they need to take time off from work to heal. A previous blog discussed common symptoms of these wounds. Social Security Disability benefits may sometimes be available so that people can keep up with expenses in the weeks and months it takes to heal. We at Adler Stilman, PLLC, understand that applying for disability benefits can initially seem confusing.

In order to qualify for disability benefits, people usually must meet the requirements of the Social Security Administration. The SSA says that people typically must have the symptoms of a traumatic brain injury for at least three months after the accident occurred. This can include having difficulties with mental tasks, such as concentrating, remembering information or interacting with people. Physical symptoms can include experiencing problems with balance or being unable to stand up easily.

After demonstrating that they meet the basic requirements for disability benefits, there are usually a few steps people must take. Sometimes people need to consult a life care planner to show how their finances will be affected by the injury. Additionally, doctors typically need to perform evaluations so the SSA can understand how bad an injury is and what kind of disabilities a person has incurred.

Brain injuries have the potential to be life-changing. Even contusions and concussions can have a lasting impact, while more serious wounds can sometimes result in comas, making family members responsible for long-term care. More information about receiving Social Security benefits for this kind of injury can be found on our web page.
