What is drowsy driving?

From the consumption of alcohol to drug use, speeding, ice on the roads and carelessness, motor vehicle collisions occur for a wide variety of reasons. In Detroit, and in other cities throughout Michigan, some people may find themselves in an accident because of drowsy driving. Sadly, falling asleep at the wheel and driving tired can be especially dangerous and has claimed far too many lives over the years.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drowsy driving takes place on urban streets as well as rural roads. When drivers doze off or fall asleep while operating a vehicle, they put their lives at risk, as well as the lives of other people on the road. In fact, drowsy driving crashes claimed more than 800 lives in 2014 alone. Moreover, these accidents can happen at any time of day or night. To make matters worse, it is not possible to pinpoint the exact number of drowsy driving accidents that take place, since drowsiness can be very difficult to measure, in some cases.

There are various ways that drivers can try to avoid drowsy driving. For example, drivers should be well-rested and alert when they get in their vehicle. Furthermore, they should not depend on coffee to stay awake and they should also recognize any medications they are taking that could leave them drowsy. Sadly, these accidents have upended countless lives, resulting in fatalities and permanent injuries. For victims of these wrecks and their family members, holding negligent drivers responsible is very important.
