Medical requirements for social security disability

Individuals in Michigan who have certain medical conditions may be eligible for social security benefits if these conditions impair the ability to work. In order to apply for these disability benefits, the impairments must be documented correctly by a medical professional and approved by the social security administration.

According to FindLaw, musculoskeletal issues are common reasons for requesting medical disability. Other medical conditions, and examples of each, include:

  • Mental disorders - includes anxiety, depression and autism
  • Cardiovascular illnesses - CAD or heart failure
  • Respiratory conditions - includes cystic fibrosis and asthma
  • Blood disorders - hemophilia
  • Digestive tract issues - IBD or liver problems
  • Immune system problems - kidney disease, HIV and lupus
  • Neurological disorders - cerebral palsy, epilepsy and MS
  • Problems with senses such as hearing and vision - complete or partial loss

In order to establish that there is impairment, there are a number of steps that a claimant needs to follow. According to the Social Security Administration, the most important part is to prove that the medical condition exists. Evidence from a specific doctor, clinic or hospital needs to be submitted, and the documentation must include a number of requirements. As a result of the evidence, the SSA must be able to determine the specific impairment and its severity, the length of time the impairment has existed and whether or not the claimant is able to perform work-related duties as a result of the impairment.

The more information that the claimant can provide will help speed along the approval process. This information should be complete, accurate and from an acceptable, legitimate medical source.
