Michigan employees who drive as part of their job are at higher risk for serious injuries and death than other workers. This leads not only to a lot of pain and heartache for family members, but it also results in expensive workers’ compensation claims. Employers should make sure they incorporate safe driving training and protocols to help decrease the number of accidents.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, injuries due to transportation incidents make up around 40% of the fatal work injuries among all industries. Driver sales workers and truck drivers are at the highest risk, although construction workers who drive as part of their job are also vulnerable. The BLS report shows that of the transportation-related injuries, over half of them occurred on the road and include collisions with others and other unspecified incidents.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reports that fatal and non-fatal motor vehicle accidents are very costly to employers. Legal expenses, medical care, property damage and lost productivity results in around $60 billion in expenses every year. Considering this, more employers are implementing traffic safety programs, especially since the majority of crashes are preventable.
Along with hiring capable drivers, performing regular maintenance checks and providing specific training, employers should also discuss specific safety issues such as:
- Distracted driving
- Seatbelt use
- Proper storage and securing of transported materials
- Drowsy driving
- Use of alcohol and drugs on the job
- Young drivers
- Aggressive driving
- Highway safety regulations
Incorporating programs that reward safe driving can also help contribute to a safer workplace and decrease accident-related costs.
